Ålands Karamelleriet is run by Johanna "Anna" and Tobias "Obi" Marquardt. Anna's family has been summer residents of Åland for 60 years. In 1961, Gunilla Nordlund's (né Gustafsson) grandfather built a summer cottage for tourists that Anna's grandparents came to as the first tenants. On the way from Germany to Åland, they always took a break in the traditional polkagris-town of Gränna. When the children were grown up, Anna's parents Sabine and Andreas decided to open a caramel cookery at home in Bremen. Sabine learned to cook polkagris in Gränna, and Bremer Bonbon Manufaktur was opened in 2009.
