Gaia is the goddess of the earth from Greek mythology. A fitting name for a building that would house the soil, water and land sciences of WUR in 1998. BD Architectuur designed the building, with sustainable construction as one of the starting points. The design for this energy-efficient building revolves around the central atrium. Here, the air from the offices goes to the roof of the laboratories where heat is recovered. The glass elevator takes visitors past a water cascade and a series of soil profiles. In 2014, Gaia and Lumen will be connected with a shared entrance, above which the World Soil Museum will be built. Thousands of soil profiles collected from all over the world can be seen here. EGM architects designed the museum, which floats like a thick sod between Gaia and Lumen. With its striking façade of orange-hued stripes, the building is a metaphor for a soil profile.
