The Hoam Museum of Art is pleased to present Unsullied, Like a Lotus in Mud, the first large-scale special exhibition that spotlights East Asian Buddhist art from a gender perspective. What sort of presences have women represented in Buddhism, and what have women sought to discover within the religion? This exhibition, featuring approximately 90 Buddhist art objects, illuminates the themes of “women in Buddhist art” and “women’s agency in artistic patronage and production.” Focusing on the aspirations, struggles, and contributions of women embodied in Buddhist art, the exhibition provides an excellent opportunity for visitors to discover the contemporary meaning within tradition.
