The Hrazdan Thermal Power Plant, located in Hrazdan, Armenia, plays a crucial role in the country's energy infrastructure. Established in 1966, it was initially built with a total capacity of 1,110 MW across several units: four 200 MW, two 50 MW, and two 100 MW. The plant is primarily used as a balancing facility, generating electricity during peak demand periods, especially in autumn and winter when other sources may be offline. Recently, significant developments are underway at the plant. The Hrazdan Energy Company, which has been part of the Tashir Group since 2017, plans to construct a new 50 MW gas piston power unit. This unit, which is set to begin construction soon, is expected to be operational by late 2024. It will not rely on government purchase guarantees, marking a shift towards a more market-driven approach.
